Firmware Updates
Each CAN-2-CAN Gateway has a unique serial number, and firmware is custom compiled to match. Do not attempt to flash firmware from another unit — uploading mismatched firmware will fail and put the device into lockout mode (both red and green LEDs flash constantly). To receive the correct firmware for your device, submit a request with your serial number and desired protocol.
Diagnostics
Troubleshooting
Common issues and resolution steps. Work through these before contacting support.
No Power / Status LED Off
Verify 12V supply at the gateway connector. Check inline fuse (3A). Confirm ground wire has clean chassis connection with no paint or corrosion at the contact point. Measure voltage directly at the gateway input pins — should read 11.5V–14.5V.
Status LED Blinking Red — No CAN Communication
Red blink indicates the gateway is powered but sees no valid CAN traffic. Verify CAN-H and CAN-L are not swapped. Check bus termination — each end of the CAN bus needs a 120Ω resistor. Measure resistance between CAN-H and CAN-L with the bus disconnected; should read ~60Ω with both terminators in place.
Gauges Showing Incorrect Data
Confirm the gateway is loaded with the correct configuration profile for your ECU and gauge cluster combination. Re-flash the configuration using the flash utility if needed. Double-check that CAN bus baud rates match on both networks (typically 250 kbps or 500 kbps).
Intermittent Gauge Dropouts
Usually caused by wiring issues. Inspect all CAN bus connections for loose pins, chafed wires, or cold solder joints. Ensure CAN wiring is twisted pair and routed away from high-current ignition wires. Add ferrite chokes if operating near VHF radios or high-frequency noise sources.
Firmware Flash Fails / Lockout Mode
Firmware is serial number locked — each gateway requires custom-compiled firmware matching its SN. If you flash mismatched firmware, the device enters lockout mode (both red and green LEDs flash constantly). If you are in lockout mode, contact us at info@marinemods.us for recovery. For normal flash issues: ensure the flash utility version matches your hardware revision, connect directly via the gateway’s built-in USB port, close all other serial monitoring software, and try a different USB port. Power-cycle the gateway and retry within 5 seconds of power-on (bootloader window). See our Update Instructions PDF for detailed steps.
Common Questions
FAQ
The gateway supports standard CAN 2.0A (11-bit) and CAN 2.0B (29-bit extended) frames at multiple baud rates (125, 250, 500 kbps, and 1 Mbps). Current protocol profiles include: J1939, MEFI 5/6/7, AEM, Holley EFI, Racepak, EMtron, FuelTech, Haltech, Ford, Mopar, and high-speed GMLAN covering all GM LS models and Duramax engine platforms. See the CAN-2-CAN Gateway product page for the full list.
The gateway electronics are conformal coated for moisture resistance. The enclosure is splash-resistant but should be mounted in a protected location away from direct water exposure. For fully exposed installations, we recommend using a waterproof junction box or mounting inside the console.
Yes. We have pre-built configuration profiles for common Cummins platforms (4BT, 6BT, QSB, ISB). The gateway translates engine parameters (RPM, oil pressure, coolant temp, boost, etc.) to your gauge cluster’s native CAN format. Contact us with your specific Cummins ECU part number and gauge cluster model for a confirmed compatibility check.
Firmware is custom compiled to each gateway’s unique serial number — you cannot use firmware from another unit. Submit a Firmware Update Request with your device serial number and desired CAN protocol. We’ll compile and email your custom firmware. Then download the update tool and follow the Update Instructions PDF. The gateway connects directly via its built-in USB port — no external adapter needed.
The gateway operates on 9V–32V DC input, covering standard 12V and 24V electrical systems. It includes reverse polarity protection and built-in voltage regulation. Current draw is approximately 50 mA at 12V under normal operation.
Yes. If your ECU/gauge combination isn’t covered by our standard profiles, we can develop a custom profile. Contact us with details of both the source and destination CAN bus specifications (DBC files are helpful if available). Custom profile development is typically a 1–2 week turnaround.
